MCOR 30 Modules

4 Quadrant Bipolar Power Supply

Features and Advantages
• Proven member of a modular Power Module Current Amplifier family.
• Each crate assembly can contain up to 8 MCOR 30 modules which can be controlled by a single EMCOR (Ethernet MCOR Controller) module residing in slot 00 of the crate.
• A single bulk supply provides all of the power requirements for all 8 module outputs.
• Precision-regulated Bi-Polar output provides up to +30 to -30 Amps for Magnet loads.
• Smooth operation through zero amps output current with minimal "Crossover" problems.
• All MCOR30 Power Modules are identical and interchangeable, and can be used in any application within its ratings.
• Each channel has a critically-damped, LC noise filter with a cut-off frequency of about 8 kHz.
• Each module contains fault control circuitry that will inhibit the output of the module when any faults are sensed.
• Output efficiency up to 90% (see specifications).
General Description
The MCOR 30 system is an 8-channel precision magnet driver, capable of providing bi-polar
output currents in the range from –30A to +30A.The output current can be adjusted smoothly through zero. A single, unregulated bulk power supply provides the main DC power for the entire crate.

The MCOR 30 occupies two slots in a 17-slot, 6U by 220 mm, Eurocard crate. The module and its mezzanine card connect to the crate backplane via two standard 48 - pin connectors About half of the output current is carried by the Mezzanine Card connector. A blinking front-panel Red LED indicates a fault trip. A Green front-panel LED indicates the presence of Bulk Power. A16-pin Front-Panel Test connector provides quick access to important major node points.  The entire crate of modules can be controlled by a single EMCOR controller module that resides in the 00 slot of the crate. Software is available to control each of the MCOR modules via either a USB or Ethernet interface.
The EMCOR controller module is also capable of controlling all other MCOR models (see the MCOR 12 data sheet) in the same crate with MCOR 30 models.

Note:
BiRa Systems calculates stability using the absolute maximum and minimum values from the complete set of data. Care should be taken when comparing stability specifications from different manufacturers, as some manufacturers calculate stability using different methods such as full width at half maximum (FWHM). The FWHM calculation will result in a lower stability number and should not be compared directly to the absolute max/min technique.
Programming Module (PGM)
Each magnet design has a unique inductance and frequency characteristic, and in addition each corrector installation has a unique cable plant resistance and maximum current rating. In order to provide “custom tailored” service to each corrector magnet, yet retain a high degree of modularity and consistency in the driver design, each MCOR model power module accommodates a small programming module - PGM. This module contains a set of passive components that match several important characteristics of power module to its corrector magnet.
Each MCOR 30 module has its own unique PGM module.
MCOR Crate
The MCOR Model 2513 is a 19” rack mounted 6U x 220 mm crate. The crate has 17 slots: 16 (slot 0 thru 15) for the removable power modules (MCOR12 and MCOR30). Slot 00 (the left most slot) houses the EMCOR controller module. The control slot employs two 96-pin VME connectors and the 16 power slots have single 48-pin connectors on the backplane to achieve a modular architecture.
The MCOR power modules slide into standard card rails and two locking extractor handles hold each module in place. The power modules are accessed by twisting three 1⁄4 turn captive fasteners and lowering a single hinged clear lexan front cover. The crate's front cover provides safety during operation and a positive air flow for cooling from the separate MCOR Blower Assembly.
For more information see MCOR Crate Datasheet.
Fault Monitoring
The following conditions will inhibit operation of the MCOR 30 modules as described below:
  • Overcurrent, Output- Trips when output current exceeds >15% of FS output in either direction.
  • Overvoltage, DC Input-Trips when the DC mains exceeds 65V.
  • Overtemp, Heatsink- Trips when the heatsink temperature exceeds approximately 70°C.
  • Overtemp, Filter- Trips when the temperature of R5 and R6 exceeds approximately 70°C.
  • Imbalance, Output Current- Trips when the current imbalance between the shunts in any shunt pair exceeds 15A.
Additional Information: HVDC (Bulk Supply) Input protected by a 30Amp fuse.
Applications
  • Particle accelerator beams
  • Medical Accelerators
  • Laboratory test and measurement
  • Testing magnetic and inductive devices
  • Battery testing
  • Solar-cell testing
