Unit Function
MCOR magnet driver systems provide currents for Corrector Magnet and Beam-Line devices used in Experimental Physics Particle Accelerators. The Bi Ra Model 2513 crate houses up to sixteen MCOR12 or eight MCOR 30 magnet- driver modules, installed in any intermixed combination. The crate is controlled by a Crate Interface (installed in the left-most slot) which adapts the crate to the accelerator’s control computer’s control-data buses (BITbus, Ethernet, etc.). The MCOR driver’s current set-point inputs are analog voltages from external Precision Reference Voltage power supplies (PVRs) or DAC outputs from a bus control interface such as a BITbus DAC module. Magnet current monitor signals are output to an external analog multiplexer-ADC unit (SAM). MCOR drivers have internal fault-sensing circuitry; in the event of a fault, logic in the Control Interface sets the Inhibit State which shuts down the magnet drivers; it also makes the Crate OK output discrete go false. A pulse on the Reset Bus resets the Inhibit state. Power for the MCOR magnet drivers is supplied by an external, uni-polar (+10 to +65 VDC) Bulk Power Supply. An internal Utility Power supply provides the crate’s +5 and +/- 12 VDC power.

General Description
A hinged plastic front cover channels cooling air flow up through the crate and keeps the crate at positive pressure relative to the rack. Crate rear panel I/O connectors are: Bulk Power Input, 110 V Crate AC Power, Magnet Driver Outputs (for up to 16 magnets on J5, J6, J7 and J8), Ext Interlock (J1, BNC), Crate OK (J2, BNC), Reference Voltages (J3, DAC). Analog Current Monitor (J4, SAM), BITbus Port (J9). • Bulk Power is input on the rear-panel Bulk Power Input (180 Amp PowerPole) connector. The magnet driver modules can be “Hot Swapped” but this is not recommended as a regular practice.

Features
The rear panel has high current capacity (180A PowerPole) Bulk Power input and Magnet Current output connectors. |
Bulk Power is distributed to each magnet driver connector by heavy-duty bus bars.
Bulk Power is protected by a 20A, slow-blow fuse behind the rear panel.
The crate is air-cooled by an external, under-crate fan-plenum unit that draws air from the aisle, blows it up through MCOR drivers and out the crate top. |

Specifications Highlights
A series 2512 Crate Interface is installed in the leftmost slot and plugs into two standard 96-pin VMEbus connectors. Slots 0 through 15 are used for MCOR 12 and MCOR 30 magnet driver modules.
The Crate Interface Board logic interacts with system control-safety discretes, Ext Interlock (J1) and Crate OK (J2) and senses magnet driver faults.
A four-layer Crate Backplane provides signal bus and Utility Power connectivity between MCOR drivers and the Crate Interface.
Backplane signal buses are: Reference Voltages, Driver Faults, Current Monitor, Reset, Inhibit, and Sync.
Crate I/O signals are: Reference Voltages (16), Magnet Driver current monitors (16), System Control/Safety discretes (Ext Interlock, Crate OK), Sync, (60 Hz, 10 VAC RMS, used as a frequency reference by the MCOR’s)
Backplane power buses are, Bulk DC Power, +5, +/- 12. |
